Hi all,
I bought a horse who had been in shoes pretty much all his life without a break, he tripped a lot when ridden and his feet didn't look great so I had his shoes taken off.

the tripping stopped straight away and the shoes have been off nearly 5months now, his feet are looking a lot better (at least I like to think they are).

It has now got to a stage where he is needing shoes back on, I have him on a barefoot diet and he is now out 24/7 for the summer. I was just looking for help as to how I can help keep his feet in good condition while shod for the summer and then he can have them off again through the winter.

Because most of the competition centres i go to have stoney lorry parks and tracks to the arenas and as i dont have the facilities at home to conditon his feet properly he doesnt cope very well. I would love nothing more than to keep his shoes off but sadly i cant if i want to compete

You just make sure you get the best farrier in the area to put on the shoes and you train yourself to know what a good and bad set of shoes look like .
If you are not sure they get an equine vet you trust to check the shoeing .
My horses work in and out of shoes as it suits me once you have done that first long transition they swop back and forwards easily IME.

Just carry on as you are doing. A decent diet and enough exercise will help the feet whether they are shod or not.

Absolutely nothing wrong with having them shod for the season and then giving them a break off season.

Thanks for all the advice it hasn't been an easy decision to put his shoes back but I feel it is the right thing to do
