Having horses and cars..

i also bought a stupid (but it was gorgeous  ) convertable sports car ,tax cost a fortune ,petrol cost a fortune & so did insurance ,it was also one of those cars that just kept going wrong :(

i was forced to trade it in at the beginning of this year as it spectaulary failed its MOT :( and i now have a 5 door 1.4 diesel fiesta that i didn't really feel the love for at first but i wouldn't swap back now , its £20 to tax (for a whole year  ) the insurance is much cheaper and i'm spending half the amount i used to on fuel :)
i can also get lots of feed and shavings in the back seat (i used to have to remove the roof and drive home with it sticking out the top of car :o )

Well i have a corsa hardly do many miles but short journeys to yard and parents. I have to fill up atleast 30quid a week its rubbish on fuel about 20-22 mpg. Its only 4years old too. A 4x4 would be as good! Mine drinks petrol and i do think I'm a fairly economic driver! For record its a 1.4 petrol!

Must say I totally agree with this - my 09 plate basic 1.0 corsa is also rubbish on fuel consumption. I previously had an x reg 1.0 corsa and it was much better. It was a 3 door and my current one is 5 door so maybe that makes a difference. They are marketed as being cheap to run so a bit misleading.

I've got a 51 plate 1.2 fiesta that I use for work although its broken at the moment! Its cheap on fuel and is ideal for nipping around town also if you put the seats down you can fit a fair bit in the back.
Also just got an ancient suzuki vitara 1.6 ltr with huge fat tyres on it, ideal for the mud and snow in winter for getting to the yard and its very comfy and spacious inside :)

we have an 02 plate ford focus 1.8lrt tdci and it moves like a rocket :) i have to fill it once a week at a cost of £75 and i do about 450 miles a week so its probs doing about 49 miles to the gallon but its probs as cheap as im gonna get as i prefer diseals and i need a larger car but it is good fun :) and i can still have my 2 horses ;)

Fellow petrolhead here - so I can feel your pain.
Just in case you decide that you can't quite give up on the sporty numbers just yet - here's an option.

I have a 97 MGF vvc. It was just over £1000 to buy, costs me £13 a month to insure on a classic MG policy with a specialist broker, does about 40 to the gallon, and is a whole heap of fun. There are horror stories out there about them - mainly related to head gasket failure, but if you buy one that has had the HG replaced already, and maintain it properly, they have a lovely revvy little K series engine, and are a whole heap of fun to throw around.
Cheap fun - and I drove mine right through all the snow last year with no problems.

Its even worse today too as last night I found out that my old car is back up for sale and I never let go of it properly either but cannot even bring myself to buy it back as its the same car i have now but just a better one... GUTTED! :(

I really do need to get a smaller cheaper car, my horse is more important to me and brings me more satisfaction and happiness than a bit of metal.

Interesting. My mum's is a 2001 - it was bought for my brother to learn to drive in as it was the only small car (in our price range) which accomodated his 6'4 rugby player's build - he tried loads and the head room was lacking in everything else (apparently, I wasn't there!). Hence we have the KA. It's not good in the back or boot, space-wise - really is very small, but it has a lot of head room.

I quite like the driving position (except my mum puts the seat practically horizontal ) but then I find my Defender to be the most comfortable car I've ever driven, so clearly I am derranged :D I found the micra - which was a mid 00s car, but automatic so clearly the spawn of satan - to be completely lacking in power (and I'm used to the landy!) and I kept hitting my head when I got out of it :o I also thought the interior felt plasticy and cheap - I prefer the tin can feel of the KA and my Landy!

The worst, most unreliable car we've had was a peugeot 206. The Ka's been pretty good for reliability (though now it will probably die on my poor mother as I've said that). The peugeot was just never done dying on me - and it was newer than the KA! I thought the gearbox was totally lacking in precision - you could get lost in the bloody thing! I always wanted a sat nav to direct me to the gear I wanted. The worst was the corsa (hire car) though. Dear god, that wasn't a gear box, it was a jar of treacle with a stick in it!

I learnt to drive in a Fiesta, so maybe that's why I find the drive quite nice (well familiar :p) in Fords.

I couldn't agree more about Polos though - I love them. I've hired them a couple of times - last time we had a polo I did about 1600 miles in about 36 hours and it was an absolute dream. If I didn't hate it at the end of that trip, it HAD to be a good car. If my mother decides against the Disco, I would certainly be pushing her towards a Polo :D (Sadly more likely an earlier model - the hires I've had have been almost brand new which is way out of our price range!).

Anyway, enjoying the car chit chat - I love rambling on about cars, I normally get told to shut up pretty quickly though :(

Arrrrrgggggghhhhhhh just typed a massive reply and the forum ate it *insert weeping smilie here*
