I am having 2 of my colts gelded in a couple of weeks time - not ideal as I would have preferred to have it done a couple of weeks ago, however vet isn't available to do it for a couple of weeks.

Spring and Autumn are the best time of year to have them gelded, before it gets too hot or too cold and before the flies are out. There can be swelling for a few days afterwards. I always turn my colts out straight after gelding; it is better to have them moving about.

My friend had her colt gelded about this time of year. the vet said that once he had woken up fully, he could be turned out and to keep an eye on the wound only.

Turn out will help with the swelling. The wound is left open to drain. Do not bathe it just leave it, if it looks red and swollen and is leaking anything other than clear, slightly blood stained fluid persistently after a few days, call the vet.

There is a rare complication of gelding called serrous cord, another friend's gelding had this.
