I had a phone call the other day about my companion loan horse from a woman who urgently needed company for her horse who's losing his friend at the weekend. Fair enough, I thought, but....

She wanted me to pay his grass livery bill, provide all his rugs and deliver him 3 hours away ...... at what point was this a loan? Seemed like I was doing all the graft!

It did concern me though that she didn't think she could afford the livery of an extra £25 a month and that she didn't seem to have access to a stable or transport. If anything went wrong and he needed stabling, or taking to the vet, what would happen? Could she even afford the vet if she was already worried about his livery?

This is what scares me about loaning! Free horse seems to equal higher risk of idiots and dreamers taking him on!

Definitley. I've loaned a couple of horses in my younger days and never once thought to ask the owner to pay the livery. If she cant afford it she cant afford to look after your horse.

thanks guys - I've never loaned a horse out before - it's all a bit of a minefield really!

Seems hard to find someone who doesn't want to ride - even just a quiet hack every so often...... or who might say they don't want to ride, then asks if he comes with tack.....

surely the whole point of a field companion is that he stays in the field??
