The last couple of winters I have thought about having my horse micro chipped but as normal with me I am/ was worried how it would affect him. Does it hurt them? Can it affect their way of going with it being in their neck muscle.

Just any info about having it donw would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

My vet insisted on sedating my horse for the microchip. I was happy to follow his advice and two years later there have been no repercussions.

I have had 2 horses chipped and neither sedated. if you have a good vet, they do it so quick that the horse doesn't really notice. if you have one that faffs however... its the same as with annual jabs...

I have an excellent vet who certainly doesn't faff thank you very much!

My vet advised sedation because my horse was young and he said that some horses do react to the impact and in her case it simply wasn't worth causing a lifetime fear of needles.

I agree that the vast majority of horses do not need sedating.

My vet likes to give a small local first and then the chip. He said he does this as it is a fairly big needle and he doesn't want to have horses then needle shy.

Farra was fine when he did her this way. Jemima was done with the local and she did have a big leap. Chancer was still out from having his nuts off when done.

LOL! I think you took that reply FAR to personally! FYI both of mine were microchipped young - one at 8 months and the other at 16 months... neither have a lifetime fear of needles caused by the trauma of the event!

Had my needle-shy horse chipped last week with a local anaesthetic first as the vet said she didn't want to worsen the fear of needles. There was still a bit of bouncing around but nothing major. Also had the donkey done without local - he managed a tiny rear but was easily distracted with a carrot!

Our shire x dutch mare was micro chipped a couple of weeks ago and never even noticed!
If your doing it as a theft deterrent i would freeze mark as well as a chip is not obvious. She didnt notice being freeze marked either.

My mare is highly strung and does have to be sedated for some things but i had her chipped without sedation, no problem at all, it was over really quickly and she didnt seem bothered in the slightest.

I chip dogs from 8 weeks of age (size dependant) no sedation.
We have just had 5 foals done, they had local first not one bothered about either jabs.
My mare was chipped without local & didn't notice either!

It is a big needle that is used & I always laugh when they say the chip is only the size of a grain of rice. Well it's one hell of a pice of rice & I wouldn't like a piece of rice being shooved under my skin!
