What are you all paying for small bale hay and haylage. We always make our own but got a small crop this year so need to buy some in. What is the current going rate?

£5 a bale for good quality small bales of hay, delivered to me.

YO is paying £25 for big bale hay (big rectangular bales) but quality isn't particularly consistent. Most bales are nice, some are better than the small bales I can get, and others are plain disgusting. I think she pays £35 a bale for large round bales of haylage and it's fantastic quality.

Buying from a reputable merchant is often cheaper than buying from a local farmer who wheels and deals in a bit of hay. The merchant tries only to buy good hay that he knows his customers will want(and come back for more). The fly by night (con ) merchants sell all sorts of crap and underweight bales. At the moment ,a typical price for good meadow hay delivered in by a merchant,(large bales ) is around£170 per tonne. There are at least 5 different sizes of big square bales (and of course the length is variable. But typicaly 80cmx 70 cm bales are about 4 to the tonne. With good sized conventional bales ,about 50 to the tonne.Delivery cost is the single biggest factor affecting price.
