Hay and straw costs where you are...

Just doing a bit of investigating as i believe our yard may be paying over the odds for hay straw and shavings ( it is bought in by the yard owner so we currently do not get a say in what is bought). With the horses coming in at night for the winter now and me bringing a bale of hay over only to find it did me 2 haynets at the price im paying i was quite dissapointed.

Can you please say what area/county you are in and what you currently pay for hay, straw and shavings please?

I pay £35 for a large heston of hay (equivalent to about 12 small bales) delivered ans stacked
Don't use straw at the mo, but if I did I could get the same size bale straw for £20 from same supplier. Was offered small bale for £1 off the field, but couldn't get there the weekend we needed to collect.
Will be using wood pellets anyway this year - buying in bulk to save money
 
Not sure what straw is (haven't paid yet!) but think its around £2.50.

Hay was £3.75 straight off the field - will be more for next load. I'm north Leeds.

I spoke to someone in north wales yesterday though (near Denbigh/Mold) and he was sellling his for £2.00 a bale straight from the field - v cheap!
 
Lincolnshire: hay small bales (25kg) - £3.50 delivered
meadow grass haylage 50kg - £7
Ryegrass haylage 300kg - £40
have my own straw, just for the livestock, don't know what prices people charge
Littlemax - £6 per bale delivered
Natural Flake - £6.25 per bale delivered
 
Gloucestershire

Small bale hay £4
Large rectangular bale hay (approx 8-10 small bales) £30
Large rectangular bale straw (not sure of equivalent) £25

From YO who makes his own.
 
Worcestershire £30 round bale of hay delivered (I think is a good price!)
Straw- large square bale £25 delivered
Small hay bales £4 each delivered (works out much cheaper to get the round bale- which I prefer but some people dont have the room so go for the little ones!)
Shavings £7 -cheapest supplier near me (although they often do a 3 for 2)
 
Our hay cost 1.40 a bale to make however we managed to sell enough hay (£2 a bale) to cover our costs so effectively our hay is free this year :)
straw is £1.50 a small bale direct from farmer :)
 
£38 for a big bale which is about 7 bales.

More than I want to pay - but this is gorgeous hay brought in from Ireland. I saw so many fields covered in ragwort this year which were then cut for hay that I am terrified of having raywort hay if I look for a bargain.
 
I'm in Sittingbourne Kent and I pay 45.00 for 5ft rounds , or 4.00 small
And 20 round bAle straw or 2.65 for small
 
Irrelevant really, but I pay the equivalent of 1.50 for 60lb small bale hay (we buy two crops of hay from a field and collect it ourselves)

18.50 for rounds of hay and straw. Straw is expensive. (Prices are give or take a few pence)

I absolutely cringe when I see the price some pay in the UK, still, I hope that with the good weather recently some farmers have got a thrid cut in and hay won't be so hard to get hold of now.

Can I put another spin on it in that your yard owner is trying to run a business and in all likely has their own mark up on the hay, straw, shavings etc etc.

It may not be a question that they are buying it in at a dear price.

£30 hay - round bale (approx 10 small bales)
£20 straw - round bale
Yard makes it's own, so, all on site. Good quality, if unhappy, YO will take offending bale or part bale and swap it. I've only ever had to do that once in 5 years!

Average cost for small bales of hay in my area are £5 delivered (minimum orders). I did see a few ads for £3.50 if collected from the field.
 
Hay - £30 large round but all sold aleady (I was hoping for 4 more)
small bale £3 collected of field when it was cut.

Straw - large round bales i think will be £15 but not asked price yet.

If anyone knows of some spare hay in south lincolnshire let me know, even if its only a few small bales here and there!
 
£5 hay (small bale)
£3.50 straw (small bale) - i think as farmer wasn't sure how much he'd have/ if he'd have to buy some in.

I don't mind paying it as we pay super cheap livery and farmer makes sure his liverys have enough to last before he sells any one

i can also get the big square hayledge bales for £30 delivered but have to order a min of 5. were in Herts
