hay and straw costs

I am thinking of moving yards but the yard I may be going to just rents you a stable and paddock and you sort out your own hay and bedding, thing is I have always had that included in the livery cost, could some one give me an idea how much hay and shavings will roughly cost per week, he is a 15 hand Welsh cross tb, very clean to muck out and a real good doer. Oh and we are on wilts / berks border.

My 15hh cob uses 1 bale of shavings per week, @£6.

He eats 3 bales of hay a week in height of winter, @£3 each (£9), but allow for it being slightly more expensive down south.

Therefore he costs me approx £15 per week, with hard food on top of course.

I think this would depend on the area you live in and how quickly your horse goes through his hay or how much you want to give him every day, whether it's a deep litter bed or a thin bed on rubber mattings, how much wet bedding you take out every day, etc.

I'm in the Hastings area, East Sussex. Square bales of hay start from around £4 each and the smaller round bales of hay from around £20. Hunters shavings are over £8. I don't know about straw, because my horse is on shavings.

If I was you, I'd call all the feed merchants/equestrian shops in your area and compare the prices. (Don't drive too far to buy from cheaper places, because you'll pay too much for fuel - unless you buy in bulk of course.)

Hants berks borders, Hay about £5/6 bale shavings £6.50 upwards, you will prob need 6 to 10 bales to start stable them about 1 week.

The big bales of haylage work out quite reasonable compared to small hay bales I find. £37 delivered from Total Equestrian. You sound quite close to me so they would probably deliver to you...

I would allow at least £40 per month in winter for hay and £6-8 Pete bale for shavings at 1-2 bales per week. I'm in north wills. X
