Hay bags... Anyone use them?

Horses make lot of mess in lorry with nets, and other day I saw a lorry with two hay bags being used instead, there was not much waste on the floor, I think they were shires brand... Anyone use them, opinions please..
 
I have a shires one, not impressed really. Horse finds it hard to vet hay out. I had to cut bigger holes in front to let him get hay out.

I love mine - saves so much time in the mornings, and it seems like there's less waste because mine will worry a haynet like a dog with a rat if she can't get the hay out quickly enough. The hole in the front's quite large.

Sorry, don't know what brand it is but it's black and every other make I've seen are blue or red.

ETA - she had her bag hanging in the stable when the back lady came, and she said that the best way to feed is off the floor, but a bag is the next best thing.
 
I have used them - two different types

The ones with the round hole in the front are very good, ponies dig in to the hay and make a nose shaped dip in the hay but in general most of the hay stays in the bag, they close together at the top and need a clip to secure them, I used a leadrope clip attached to a quick release tie up bungee

the other sort have a square hole with a haynet type covering over the hole and a drawstring top, the ponies did not like those as once the hay directly behind the hole was eaten they then have to push against the bag to get the rest, then the bag extends down further than the hole and they get frustrated that they cant get to the hay at the very bottom. They both tore the bags apart as a protest

The first type are very good though
 
Diamond dogs, does yours have a large hole without mesh, as they are the ones I saw other week, seems to make it easier to get hay out when traveling , cos in the stable horse can step back to tug at a net but in the lorry they can't, can only raise head up and down, that's why they get hay all over place cos they Snatch so hard at net.
 
I have them in my trailer, the large hole no mesh ones. I like them.

(I did find my yearling just eating right out of the top of the bag though, lol)
 
I have Wrangler ones and they're great for when we're away with the horses. They have a clip strap that you just attach to the outside of the trailer and there's very little wastage. We travel our horses loose so when they're in their box stalls in the trailer, hay is fed loose on the ground. We only use the hay bags for when the horses are unloaded and tied to the trailer.

I had some shires ones in my lorry. My horse managed to work out how to loosen the toggle and ties at the top and eat out of there instead of the mesh hole, which kind of defeated the object :-)
 
I have the Shires deluxe one in my 3.5. My previous horse broke the mesh at the front trying to get to the hay so I cut it off and put a haynet inside it which does reduce the mess.

I wouldn't pay that much for them until you have tried them. I find they are very good but I only buy the ones that Poundstretcher sell £2.99m !!! Other cheap "pound-style" shops are available! Obviously not as well made as the Screwfix one - but worth paying less than £3 for a trial, mine have lasted me all winter!

It's similar to this one but the hole's a bit bigger. It's got d-rings at the top so I hold the top and hang it up with an old flash strap or dog collar. I think I paid about £11 for it in the local tack shop.
