Hay Bars

I have hay bars too. One horse ate neatly out of it straight away, the other took great delight in emptying it but after 2-3 months became bored of that game and eats it neatly now.

One tip I have is to put a rubber feed skip in the bottom as it makes keeping them clean much easier, also I feed soaked hay so it catches run off that would other wise end up on the stable floor (the base of the haybar is not solid). The round feed skip soon molds into a triangle shape.

I have a home made one (thought the price for a piece of plastic was madness), and I needed a big one as one of mine has 2/3 of a bale at night!

Much prefer them to be eating from the floor (ish) rather than up high (more natural for their neck muscles and less dust/ seeds dropping into their nose).

Less than £10 each

Leave enough of a gap at the bottom to sweep or shovel out the seeds and rubbish

I love my hay bar. I had the same trouble as others - starting off by emptying it out but is now much tidier. I also put a rubber skip underneath - much easier to clear out each morning when mucking out and it does mould to the triangular shape.

I still get some hay in the bed in the morning, but it makes so much less mess than just throwing the hay on the floor.

I hate hay nets.

I've got an eezhay, yo got a multipack from eBay so they worked out about £35 each. Love mine! Would never go back to nets now

My naughty old mare takes great delight in turfing all her hay out of hers and onto the floor! It looks lovely before she is let loose on it and imagine other greedy horse may be getting it in the future.:)

I'd like one when daft lad grows up a bit, if I got one now I think he'd either pull it off the wall by sitting on it or climbing into it...

Do you not find they eat their hay too quickly with it?

Yes, but some clever people on here have got round that, but I can't remember how. I do hope someone will enlighten us!

Don't some people fill a small hole haynet and tie the net to the bottom of the hay bar ....?

I just tolerate mine pulling all his hay out and making a mess. :p

Our stables are deeper than average (about 20') and fully rubber matted. I just put a bed down in the back half and put the hay on the floor at the front. One of my horses always drags his hay to the back of his stable to eat but I don't think a bay ar would stop him doing that. I don't like using haynets as I think it is an unnatural position for them to be grabbing and tugging the hay.

I've had mine for about 5 years and love it. a natural way for horse to feed, quick and easy to fill. love it. There are cheaper copies on the market, but they look a bit flimsy to me

We have them, we like them but they are a bit mixed in effectiveness. The Old Cob eats neatly out of hers, the Appy throws hers out and eats it out of the bed and the Big Girl no longer has one as she sat on it and pulled it off the wall  We only ever use nets for travelling, hate them in stables.
