Fellow DIY'ers seem to have changed to feeding their hay by weight. How much for a 16.1 warm blood in light medium work when the weather permits?

I don't feed ad lib, just using judgement of work/weather etc. Curious to know how much by weight, may manage to save a few pence and keep him in good shape.

I did feed ad lib through the last spell of bad weather and now have a fat horse!

depends on whether he's a good doer or not. i change mine depending on the weather etc/ during the snow they were getting 10kg at night and 4kg in the morning. they started leaving the morning hay when the snow went so we've stopped that and gradually reduced the evening hay back to 5kg. they live out 24/7. one is a fit hunter, the other is an old semi-retired Welsh Cob and the third is an 8yr old Welsh just coming back into work. None of them are particularly prone to getting overweight.

if your horse is in medium work i always go on that a horse in medium work should have 70% hay and 30% hard feed, but every horse is different this is a guide line really.

if he needs the weight etc you might want to give him more or if he is a bit podgy give him less... it just depends on your horses needs but as a guideline your to work out your horses weight in food is as follows:

horses height x2 then -4 for horses and + 4 for ponies, think that is right lol so a 16hh horse would need 28lbs of feed per day then you take this and depending on what work they do then split it between hard feed and hay.

sorry i know this is a bit textbook but when i was doing my exams this got drummed into me constantly and has kinda stuck :D
