Hi all I just wondered what people put there hay in in the stable?

Personally I don't like haynets and prefer to feed on the floor, but with both my girls if they get it in their beds they then won't eat it :(

The walls are too difficult to drill so hay bars are out too, any ideas???

Thanks breakfast in bed for all your help!

I spent ages making a contraption last year out of a wheelie bin only to find horse didn't like it and could/wouldn't use the force required to pull the hay out from the bottom.

I then went to b&q and bought this yellow hippo rubble sack and folded the sides over twice and shook the hay into it. This meant hay was already shaken apart so Topaz didn't have to shake apart roughly reducing the spread of hay across the stable, and I can't think its that nice a moment for them have to roughly shake head to pull it apart.

It worked an absolute treat and got the ground feeding I required.. They need to be desensitised to tarpaulins/rubble sacks first though so completely confident about it. Also confident about it moving if they put foot in it and pull it back underneath them and it rustles.. so 100% confident. I put some heavy stones/bricks in the bottom one in each corner so he didn't turn over.

Which were also good for his hooves if he did play with it with his feet.

Really good buy, and now I'm just in field 24/7 have the tarp if ever needed for things; emergency boot/poultice lining things etc.

Best wishes
Hannah

Can't help with the hay but thought I would mention that you can get drills, bits, and fixings for almost any material these days.

Try your local commercial plant/tool hire company. It cost me £15 to hire a special drill for stone and it went in like a hot knife through butter. Just a thought.

I went to a DIY shop and found one of those black plastic water tanks - a big round one. It had a hole in it so they couldn't sell it, I offered peanuts and got it :-)

Thanks guys, we've have industrial drills try the walls but it seems 100 years of paint plus the wall are pretty solid!

Will investigate DIY shops!

I use a half of one of those big round bale feeders attached to the wall - can fit a 24hr add lib supply of hay or haylage in it for 1 gg and they don't put quite so much all over the floor!!:)
