My pony has developed hay fever this summer. I think she may have had the onset of it last year as occasionally had a watery nose and a bit breathy, this year she has a very watery nose and fast breathing if left out in the field during the day. She is fine over winter and never coughs. If left in during the day she is fine for an hour to ride before it kicks in. I too have suffered hay fever for the first time ever this year as all the plants seem to be going mad, my yukkas have blossomed for the first time ever and they have been in the garden for over 7 years! I wonder if any one has had success with cures or controls for this? One vet suggested steroids and another homeopathy. Any suggestions welcome!

As you are managing it fairly well I would continue as you are, keeping her in during the day and away from the pollen as much as you can, it is likely to be a reaction to a specific pollen so moving to a different field may help. I wouldn't want to be using steroids unless they are essential, save them until they are required if you are lucky she may not need any more than you are doing, I have used homeopathy, yes I know that people are sceptical, but it did seem to work for one pony and he improved while on them, a day off and the symptoms got worse, I just used a general hayfever remedy.

If the riding is an issue try using a nosenet, it should help reduce the pollen breathed in and could make her more comfortable.

Chlorphenamine 4mg (piriton) worked well for my pony. She was 10.2hh and was on 30 tablets a day until we could reduce it to a maintenance dose of about 5 per day.
