Hay has gone!

Don't panic. Hundreds of farmers took advantage of the recent good weather in Cumbria and got some cracking hay done. I suspect many other counties did aswell. I am sure that good hay will filter down to you in time for winter.

Panicing (sp) only puts the prices up :D

Farmer near ne has done second cut of haylage. wonder if he will get a third. Last year got small bales of hay at 1.50 off field. This year gone up to £2.75.

Get the yellow pages out and ring farmers in your area, you`d be surprised how many sell their hay quite cheap.

I`m paying £2.50 small, £20 big hay or haylage

I always spread my haylage out once opened so it doesnt turn manky.

Sorry I have not answered anyone - I have been away for a week at an event yard then had no internet until recently and only just checked this thread (not releasing so many people have posted - there should be some sort of notification system)... I will try and answer as many questions as I can remember!

I cannot turn out 24/7 as I'm on a livery yard that cannot accommodate this.

Yes the Canadian hay is small bales - but apparently heavier but I cannot bring myself to pay £10 a bale!!!

I've had quite a few PM's from members with suggestions - and one recommendation for a farm who supplies hay & haylage and have managed to buy some small bales for £4. Was one of the cheapest I have rung... It is lovely stuff but smells like haylage but isn't wrapped and completely dry????

Also a big thanks to everyone who posted, made suggestions and advised :)
I am now going to buy a load straight off the field so I'm not in this position next year.

They may not go off completely, but did not feed well, if left vacant for too long, especially in the summer. We just have a smaller bales this year, because we only have two in Malaysia this winter, I am worried appearance package...

I've been using colehay..... and the canadian hay I think you are talking about. I think it's the same because in comes on pallets of 18 bales. Just thought it might be worth mentioning that the bales weigh 40kg (over double the size of a small bale) so it's actually not that expensive. If you break it down its less then paying the same as £5 per bale delivered (of small bales). You should ask for a sample my horses love it!

They also do haylage ands bedding. www.colehay.co.uk 01837 83837
