What sized bales? Rounds will store quite well outside provided they are kept off the ground (on pallets?) as they will wick water up if they have damp bottoms. You'll lose less if the tops are covered. Leave a gap between the bales (not like the ones in the picture!) and put them in a row parallel to the prevailing wind where the sun can get to them. There will not be much loss.

Why don't you make a cube out of 4 pallets tied together with bailer twine?
