Hay nets...

Marts nets. They have survived 4 months of serious abuse from my thug and look good as new. They do a trickle style net, and an even smaller almost fishing net style. I've got one of each and just split his hay ration between them, as he sussed out eating quickly from a trickle net in about 10 minutes

great ty Dragon this has helped me too as My Id gets through a net so quickly I have to give her one section then wait 4 hrs to give the next two for the night as she finishes 1 section in 1 hr

I will look into both these options as I did get the trickle net but it is so stiff to open it was hard to fill

I did buy these two weeks ago but the holes stretch with use http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Shires-De...hash=item3cf5311773:m:msKsxUxRZlDi4wGdvnaYxuQ

How does the shires and marts net compare to this

Whatever hay net you use you need to make sure that the string is tied through the bottom of the ring otherwise if it is just tied to the outside of the net and the horse pulls the hay it will break the net. I thread my string through the side of the net (or the horse could get his head stuck between string and side of net), through the bottom ring and tie properly. It is a struggle as the strings they supply you with are not that long!

Mine cost me £12 each but i reserve those for the evening so I tie them and they are secured in this way. The others for the day that the yard owner uses are old and because they are not tied through the ring I don't care if they break the holes in the net.

It hasnt happened with mine and mine is a complete thug. And they havent stretched at all either HGA :)

found the shires greedy nets pretty good - though some ponies can get a bit angry with them to start with if they are used to stuffing down their hay ( try putting a bit of the ration on the floor for them to grab to take the edge off their hunger for a few days - they soon work out how to use the nets)
very easy to fill if you fold the tops back to the outside.

I really like the shires blue & black nets, perfect size to cram loads in(I ad lib hay) & holes just right size- not tiny but not big enough to pull out loads & make a mess. Can easily get 1/2 a bale in them & they're really strong. I did once order the red & black version but didn't use it as was just ridiculously large.

The Shires GF nets are straight bottomed. The black ones hold about 9kg hay if well packed. Once you have some in the bottom, they are pretty much free standing if you turn the top edge outwards. The hanging rope is very long and tough. I normally pass the rope through one of the bottom corners and tie off... but I have hay hooks in my boxes so I just have to hook the rope over the hook to hang.

We use the big red and black Shires Deluxe ones for both of ours. Jazz is a total muncher but he's always got some left in the morning! He's also pretty destructive but my last big Shires net lasted about a year - I have a haybar and put his net in that (it's still tied up, obviously) so that possibly helps.

That is the one I have for my mare and she still wolfs her hay down in that size hole haynet so the shires delux is out of the question as the net now is only 3 weeks old and so big i can get 4 sections in

Ty Frankie

spent so much money on haynets and she still a guzzler - will look into these two mentioned above
the greedy feeder and martsnets one

anyone know how these compare with the trickle feeder??

also Frankie how does the slow feeder differ from the small holed one??

Just wondered when our horses got so greedy I have had to put mine on small holed nets so they do not eat all their 8kgs in an hour. I now have quite a pile of good but not needed normal holed nets. The good thing about small holed though is they are unlikely to get a foot caught in them.

I have eight of these, I have had them five years. No damage, I'm pleased with them.

Marts nets are brilliant! Very strong had mine 2 years now, it's been all round the yard and thoroughly abused but not a hole in it. The bright colours help you identify it too when it "goes off for a wander!"

As far as I know they are just a copy of the trickle net. The slow feeder has smaller holes, tiny ones. I wouldnt want to just use that. I use it in conjunction with the normal small holed net. As in split his hay ration between the two nets :)

Thanks Frankie, I ordered Orca one after reading this! I have gone for the slow feeder for her. She's already on a small holed net and it doesn't seem to slow her down one iota. She still seems to manage to grab big mouthfuls (and does need to lose weight!). It will be interesting to see whether this slows her too much or down to 'just right'.

similar: I give her one section at 5-6 and 2 sections at 10pm or she would finish all 3 by 7.30pm. So I find the trickle net to hard to fill and the rope too hard to widen to put more hay in.

So this might be worth a shot.

Must say I stupidly brought three of the slow feeders and I am not happy as she has hay left in the morning and knowing what was in there at night and they are a ****** to fill with my bad hand. I don't like these slow feeders haynets for a 16.1 mare so hey ho now I have to sell them on along with the trickle net as they wont take returns.

I presume you got the marts net slow feeder?

I was thinking of getting one of these, how does it compare with your trickle net with regard to size of hole and difficulty to fill.

I currently have the shires greedy feeder and they are rather destructible - I have bought 3 and they have lasted less than a year, but this might be because he also has soaked as well so the water may weaken the twine {he is a greedy native prone to weight gain} and he really pulls at the hay and I think the twine goes where the string is attached to net - haynet ends up on the floor!

He does not usually have a problem with eating all his hay using the greedy net and YO has to give him a top up occasionally when she does her late night check if he eaten most of his hay, but I was thinking of trying the marts nets either small hole or slow feeder. I am on part livery and yard does not like trickle nets as they are hard to fill and I am not keen on them as the twine is quite hard and raspy which might not be nice for my pony's nose.

.

My horse only arrived today so I can't speak to longevity but I find it no more difficult to fill than any new haynet. The holes are at least half the size of the Shires small holed hay net and the twine is no rougher (aside from at the edges possibly). I'm on livery too and I'm really hoping this net will mean hay lasts my piggly overnight. Topping up is not an option - she's enormous!

I've never heard of or experienced this problem before. I run the rope of the net through the tring then thread it through one of the holes near the bottom, tie with a quick release - is this what you mean? how does the haynet break doing it this way?
