Hay on yard - how would you handle this?

Mmhh if you used about 7 slices of hay would that not be approx 3/4 of a bale?
The way I look at it is as a YO we feed by weight & if some one wants there horse to have a hay net 24/7 that is fine providing you pay for it. Lets face it some people feed more concentrates & say 10k of hay per day so why should they pay for those that choose to feed little concentrate feed & 20k of hay/haylage per day? It is just not reasonable. If you want to use it then pay for it Simples!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The yard I used to be on was the same..... 1/2 a bale per equine per 24hours.... Now that was great for merlin..... but silly for the little 12hh ponies and not enough for the biggies....

I left before it came to a head !!!

On my old yard you paid by how many kilos you wanted so those with smaller ponies were't paying the same as those with larger horses. So if you wanted to waste hay you were paying for it, but uneaten hay was not allowed on the muck heap and if you had any left over you just had to top it up, therefore you soon learnt to give your horse the correct amount.

1) When my horse eats hay from the floor he picks it up in his mouth, and chews it in the same way he does when he pulls hay out the net.

2) What?! You do realise that gravity doesn't affect breathing don't you?! No matter if I bend down, or tilt my head back, the airways are still open. Hence why horses don't die when their heads aren't on the floor.

3) Then tie your nets better. None of my horse have ever got headcollars or feet caught in haynets.

When I put hay on the floor, my horse wes and poos on it, then can't eat it. Everyone has their own preferenecs, this isn't sharia law you know!

Haynets are a necessary evil for most of us. But as mine are properly tied, and nice and high, my horse has never got his feet caught in them. And he doesn't wear a headcollar in the stable.....

If you want to go down the larger hay net route I recommend the shires red and black haylage net.

The holes are fairly small so takes them longer to eat but the net is massive.

Well when we get sharia law, me being a man will mean I can make up laws to suit myself, I will make sure hay nets are outlawed and anyone using them will be stoned to death,

Ha - I was going to say get a hay bar and fill up a wheel barrow with Hay instead (Does this make me exempt from being stoned to death ?)

Freshman-I don't feed hay in the field due to there being adequate grass...
And yes, he will refuse it if offered it as the sole option for 2-3 days at a time. I'm not willing to not get food into a poor doer for any longer than that.
