Horse is currently on Hay and will be going onto haylage next week when i move him yards

He has been on haylage previously when at that yard and all horses I have ever kept on haylage all seem to have done quite well just wondered what peoples thoughts and experiences are with the pros and cons of hay and haylage?

the haylage certainly looks like it tastes better... :o

Haylge for me & mine. I come out in a rash and sneeze a lot if I tough hay, but filling nets with Haylage I have no problems. None of mine cough or wheeze, and my stuff has no additives added to it, it's meadow hay wrapped.

I use haylage for three reasons apart from the fact that it is wrapped and I have no storage for hay - the horses love it, there is no risk of dust and I need less supplementary feed. I really would hate to go back to hay now.

We use hay in summer as we only have two horses and don't use so much in summer. I like that it is very easy to handle, both moving bales around and getting in a net. My mare can cough on it though, so has to have it damp.

Haylage works out a lot cheaper for us (we have our own yard) and is a lot easier to store. We don't have a tractor, so pushing it into the stable we use as a hayshed is hardwork. It goes off more than hay, we tend to buy v dry, haylike haylage now. I find it a pain to get into nets, especially this year, where it all seems like a neverending thread. I also think it contributed to our pony getting laminitis one year when it was really rich, so keep an eye out now on the others. My mare never coughs on it though.

I use haylage, ours seem to get on better with it and I also don't have storage so having wrapped bales is handy. Wish you could tell wheather it was going to be decent stuff though as the last two bales I've had were pants! Our two are not at all fussy though being fatty cobs so it's not been a problem for them but I'd prefer to feed much better quality stuff and so will be changing my provider for our next delivery.

I have one on haylage and one on hay! Reason is that yard includes haylage as part of livery but I have to buy my own hay (no reduction to livery).
The one if hay can't have haylage as she blows up like a barrel, gets a bit narky and gets horrible sloppy droppings.
Haylage always looks 'tastier' but by choice I'd have both on hay... Just can't afford it!!
