Small bales of hay at the place I buy them from (singally) are £4.25
Round bales of haylage are £30
I'm thinking of asking someone at the yard if they want to go in halves for haylage as we wouldn't use it fast enough on our own. Which would you think is better value for money? I use 2-3 small bales a week- would use more if I had the haylage.

The haylage is far better value for money, if it is fairly dry it will last longer than the wet stuff does and even if you did waste a bit you would still be saving money, if you share a bale it would be ideal. You get around 10 small bales in each big one, possibly a bit more in a round bale.

How soon does it have it have to be used by one opened if it's outside , covered by tarpaulin on a pallet? Would it keep longer if the wrapping is taken off completly or if it's removed as we need it ?

I found it would keep for 2 weeks when it is very cold and covered tightly (my supplier have me a huge plastic bag, which was re-sealed each time), or one week if it was warm and the bale was covered as opposed to sealed.

I buy round bale Haylage but it's more of a light haylage so it's much drier and it's lasts weeks once opened, I think quite a few farmers will make this you may have to ask about to find some but I find it works for me and it's costs £35.

I haven't had haylage before so how can I tell if it is the dryer type? I can see what it's like as I can look at a friends. I'm only able to get small bale hay or large bale haylage.

Hay as you are not paying for wrap. Also, when i have feed haylage, I have had to throw a lot away as it goes off.

I don't agree with this I'm afraid. Good hay takes longer to make and there is more risk involved.

OP I haven't found my horses to be any different on hay or haylage :)

Haylage gave mine loose poos. You also need to feed more. I used to have small bales and found they lasted longer without the wrapping but they were stored inside.

You say you don't agree with the points that I made, then counter with two statements unrelated to what I said. I am afraid that I only work with logical arguments, not random statements.
