Does anyone use the *pillow hay nets* to feed from the floor?
Basically i feed from the floor but sick of hay being blown about and trampled.
How safe are the nets?
Its for 2 cobs who are barefoot.
Thanks :)

I wondered if you could just remove the string from a small holed haynet and tie the top together and feed it on the floor. I couldn't think why not if they aren't shod but I'm sure someone will enlighten me.

I have used haynets on the ground for a couple of years, never had a problem except if it is too muddy. I use the existing neck cords, tie them very tight then double the surplus back on itself until it is all used up. Works very well on dryish ground and you get the added entertainment of lots of local experts telling you your haynets have come loose :)

Does anyone use the big hay nets that cover a large round bale?
Was going to go for one of these but wondered what happens when the net gets emptier? does it lose shape and become baggy and awkward?

I've got one. They can eat it all the round bale with it on, as long as when you lace the strings through the ring feeder you make sure it can fall down. Takes a bit of practice to get it perfect but it does stop them wasting as much.

Going to try haynet on the ground for new horse in her stable. Wonder how many folk will attempt to tie it up for me...

Another vote for a haynet secured with a carabiner. Horse (cob, barefoot) loves his 'hay football' and has great fun throwing it about in his stable. My one concern is that he'll accidentally toss it over the door, so I split his hay between two nets.

Our old yard used the big greedy feeder nets with Equi-Ties through the top where the rope normally went. They went out in the field and survived being dragged about by 12 hungry horses in all weathers. Worked a treat. They hosed off easily when they got dirty. I made my own for my stables. Much prefer them to haynets and less wasted hay than just feeding from the floor.

Can I ask why you guys feed from floor as opposed to tying it up?

Better more natural eating position - no neck wrenching pulling sideways, and the net lasts longer IME as they toss it around. And in the field you don't get those poached hay ridden areas round your few suitable fence posts or gates. I don't do them in stables, too much muck around, mine have home made hay bars, but still at a level lower than their chests.
