Hay Prices

For those of you who are being 'held to ransom' by some suppliers charging ridiculous amounts for a bale just remember them when next years crop is harvested. Find another supplier & leave them with their hay unsold. This is the only way to deal with those profiteering from the situation. I understand that an increase may be warranted but some have doubled their prices & more which is greedy.

everyone is welcome to vote with thier feet, but remember that when you are desperate that loyalaty is remembered, plenty of our customers have a job to give us 24 hour notice and expect deliveriesto thier stable what ever the weather or condition of road/lane to get to thier stable.

Ive just paid £35 for large rectangular bales, my 2 horses have been through 2 of these in a month they live out 24/7 but the grass just seems not to have grown, so they have been just as expensive to keep over the summer as they will be in winter, lets just hope this winter is kind to us eh!

It amazes me that people still think the price hay was 25 years ago is a fair price. Try living on the wages of 25 years ago. Hay has been greatly underpriced for far too long.Welcome to the real world.

I don't think anyone has mentioned hay from 25 years ago? As I posted, an increase in hay prices is inevitable as costs increase however to hype up the price by 100-200% & in some areas or even more is pure profiteering.

A similar thing happened at a filling station when the fuel strike/shortage was on & they increased their pump prices by several 100% & held their customers to ransom. They seemed to think that they were so important that they could do what they wanted. When the strike was over the filling station was boycotted & they went out of business. It goes to show that sellers may have what buyers want....but it is the buyers choice as to where they do their buying from.

The problem has been ,that hay has not increased in price,in line with costs .If it had ,it would be over £6 a bale delivered. And no,that is not a figure idly plucked out of thin air. It was calculated from the price of hay in Surrey,25 years ago and adjusted with the RPI.

In my area our field have also yielded 50% less than last year due to the lack of rain. We were also feeding stock forage because of this lack of grass when we wouldnt normally. Means forage levels are lower, yields are lower and so prices go up.

This is why hay prices are so high. Also fuel is the most expensive it has ever been.
