Hi can anyone tell me how much hay is this year in the East Sussex area. My supplier has informed me he is charging £4.00 per bale off the field is this reasonable? thanks

I remember a couple of years ago the person I had been buying from, for 25 years - suddenly decided to double the price. I said I wasn't prepared to pay and i would buy haylage instead. I went home and he called me later that day to drop the price to a sensible rate. I don't know how much you are buying, but if you know them well, question the price. Sadly, if it's really nice hay, you might have to accept the price.

Have just bought a load of 4ft rounds for £20 off field next to my dads house, was inpressed with quality when I saw it yesterday. Lovelt man is barn storing it for me too and dad bring a couiple over to kent as and when I need it

Your prices sicken me! Last year our farmer who produces the crapppiest of the crap hay (and your not allowed to buy your own stuff in) was charging us £7 a bale. Luckily the winter was in our favour and I only needed about 3 or 4. Hideous stuff. As his land is just neglected he has no drainage so is having to wait a little longer for hay to be cut, he told me the other day it may be selling for £15 a bale. A SMALL BALE. A SMALL BALE OF HIDEOUSLY MANKY HAY.

Needless to say, I shall be buying my own stuff in this year. And no, we have no written/signed contract to make this a breach of contract!

had various emails via pony club, £3 bale off field, north chailey and kingston nr lewes
can pm you details if you need :)

I have just paid £3 a bale off the field, nice hay, big bales! We just bought as soon as we got the call it was ready as I dont think we will get it any chepaer anywhere else!

I'm pleased to see that the average price seems to be £3 a bale off the field as mine was baled yesterday and we paid our contractor £500 for 250 bales = £2.00 per bale. As we still have quite a few left from last year year sold a small surplus to a friend for that price. She had the cheek to infer I was over charging her even though the price did'nt included the cost of the compond we put on in the spring. Think she needs to look at this post!!!

Cant you move?

There may only be one cut this year however as can be seen from previous posts the crop is significantly bigger this year than last. Last year due to drought it was all stalk but this year on one 3.5 acre field it produced 370 bales instead of the measly 225 last year so there should be plenty available & it shouldn't be at silly prices. :)

OP, I see that you're East Sussex. There's a place between Tenterden and Rye selling 2.25 off the field. Is that doable? She's on the Horse Store Sussex facebook page, Amber Delaney.

Sorry am not in your area am in Devon: but have just been quoted £4 a small-bale delivered (just a mile up the road) straight out the field from a local farmer.

He hasn't made it yet!!! But I've ridden past the field regularly and if all goes well it should be lovely hay.

I have ordered mine at £3.25 a bale delivered but we only got it at this price as my YM has ordered 500 bales and I have ordered 100. Last year I paid £2.50 per bale but then had to get my hubby's friend to collect and deliver for me so ended up paying £3.50 so am happy with this years price :) Also happy that they had cut our hay on Monday so should be baled by end of the week just praying for the sun to stay!

dread to think what it will be like down here - i swear as soon as the county of hampshire is mentioned prices shoot through the roof!!

anyone know anywhere around this area who is doing OTF hay at a half decent price i.e £4 or less? :)

I got my hay £3.00 a bale delivered but he only drops the trailer off and leaves you too it , although im only down the road from him.

I'm amazed at how little hay prices have gone up. Years ago (about 30!) I used to pay £1.50 a bale. If they went up the same as inflation they should be a lot more than £3 a bale now! Luckily I don't have to buy any in as I get it very reasonably from my livery yard and as they live out on good grazing and I feed simple systems, use very little hay anyway. (two years ago I had 60 bales for my horse and a small pony and then moved to the yard - I think I used 20 bales that winter even though it snowed for about 3 weeks). Now I pay £1 for a haynet which I can fill as full as I like or £16 a month for hay every day (only when I need it though). Having said that the hay is still in the field and am waiting to see when it can be cut. My yard owner is fanatical about making sure the hay is ragwort free and cut when it is dry.

Middle of Devon ............ have been quoted £2 a small bale (av 25kg). There is so much hay in bulk that prices should not be high..... mind you there will always be people who try extortionate prices for horses.

I paid £4.50 a bale a month ago (10 bales picked up from farmer's barn in trailer) as I was desperate - it was this year's hay though and very nice but still a bit green. I would therefore expect to be paying considerably less than this now though as I have heard that the fields are yeilding 3 x last year. Buckinghamshire

I don`t know whether Stockbridge (SO20) would be too far for you to come but if not I know of some being baled tomorrow?

There is quite a bit nearer to you advertised on the NFED I think?
