Does hay have to be green to be ok to feed???

I have been given the chance to use some of last years hay for nothing but its a browny colour. Its not mouldy or dusty ( soak for 12 hours anyway ) its just that its brown as oppose to my usual hay which is green. Will this be ok to feed???

You will probably find its seed hay as opposed to meadow hay, so yes im sure it will be fine

IMO it should be ok, it does go brown deepending on how it is stored, when it is made etc. Not all last yers hay was green due to the wether.

Hay to be green!!! it is full of sugar whilst still green and shouldn't ideally be fed until it has started to turn a brownish colour anyway. It is likely to cause laminitis when green so you are doing the right thing if you buy the 'brown' hay!!

Yes the green hay was all i could get and its this years thus i soaked it for 12 hours!!!

I know someone who has a few large round bales of the brown hay and i can have them for free!!! One bale will literally last me a few months!!!

Yipee!!! thanks everyone!!!

If the hay was left on the ground a while before baling up then the sun would have bleached it (sometimes if it gets rained on after it was cut, it will stay on the ground longer to dry back out) and it will have lost its green-ness. As long as it doesn't smell musty or is dusty, it should be fine.

Can you not have a sample to try out before taking it to make sure it will get eaten?
