So I just had my first delivery of 2020 hay yesterday. It smells really different to the 2019 that I've got left! It's quite green in places, and it smells really sweet, kinda like apple juice, basically like haylage. Is this just what fresh hay is like?! It's not black, or overly dusty.

I googled this yesterday as I was convinced the farmer had given us haylage instead of hay by mistake!

In my case I think its because I usually feed old hay that doesn't smell of much at all.

We've had to have this years hay now as he's run out of last years, and it is the sweetest smelling hay ever.

Its completely dry though and never been wrapped so it is definitely hay.

Now I'm just worried that its going to be far too good for my 3 natives!

Yes, exactly the same on all counts! Although I'm hoping to open up all my long grass in a few weeks, and I'm guessing even "rich" hay can't be richer than old grass? And at least by the spring, this "new" hay won't be so new any more.

Ours is the same, the farmer told me they had made some fantastic hay this year and I think this is what he meant. Its almost bright green and smells as sweet and aromatic as some of the hard feeds. I've asked him to bring some more of the old stuff and I've been mixing it as think it might be too rich and fattening for my 2 ponies. The good thing is that its taking them ages to pick the nice stuff out of the old hay which is making it last well.

That's a good idea.

I think I'll mix the new hay with some straw.
