Hi, just to say if any one is thinking of buying a hay steamer then go for it! I bought one at Blenhiem and am so glad I did. I am getting hay at £2.50 a bale and the horses love it when it has been steamed, so much better than soaking nets !!

Can i ask how much you paid for it?

I would love one but they are so expensive.

Make your own :-) All you need is a Wheelie bin (ebay!) or even a dustbin with a hole drilled in the bottom into which you insert a Wallpaper steamer which is plugged into a timer. Voila, does the same job for a fraction of the price!

What a great idea,

How long would you steam this way for ? do you need to steam longer?

I have a paper steamer in the garage and an old water butt with a lid on! im off to give it a go!!

Ill keep you posted!!

Probably no way near as good, but we used to use a plastic dustinbin with a lid - stuck the hay net in a poured 2 boiling kettles of water over and left the lid on for half hour. Used to just lift and tip the water out afterwards.
V cheap and cheerful, but prob not as efficiant enough for those with COPD
I like the idea of the wallpaper stripper, I am all for money saving tips!

Mine is made with a wheelie bin & wallpaper stripper. I can get two fairly loosely packed haynets in, one on top of the other.

However, pony is still coughing up mucus occasionally, so don't know if it's doing the job well enough. It runs for an hour on 5 litres of water. I wonder if she'd still cough if I used the 'real' version.

I made my own last year thanks to a post on here. Its brilliant. Wallpaper steamer from wickes. One of those small plastic garden containers from argos. the one that holds cushions for chairs with a green lift up lid. It holds a bale. I fill the steamer up and leave working while I muck the horses out. In total it cost me about £70

Building a diy whole bale one is brilliant. How did you make such a big one??? We looked at getting one of the smaller ones to take away to events etc like these but they're quite pricey.

Hello All,

Just thought id let you all know i made my hay steamer today, its fab!!

Oh and i could eat it myself it amells so nice!!

I have used:

1 small outdoor plastic barrel drilled a hole in the bottom - 1 paper steamer put through hole of barrel - then when steaming i put the lid on it.

TIP - i have bought a timer to set it to come on 4pm - 5.50pm as it takes 30 min to heat up - and i dont have a lot of time on a night as i tend to do everything on a morning!

It is great and loads better than soaking!

But not if you are soaking to remove sugar........ steaming will help with dust and mould but doesn't take the sugar out.

Fatties beware! :-)

Yes this is true! i was only soaking in the past for a cough! so it was mainly to remove dust etc!!! but must admit so far so good but i am only on day 1 so will play it by here!!
