I opened a bale of wrapped hay (completely dry,, not like haylage) in around May time. I have used it over summer for haynets when travelling and for the chicken nest boxes! I have loads left. It smells ok although looks a little faded on the outside and the bits that have collapsed and its very dry. It doesnt seem really dusty and I soak it anyway for my two little boys. Its undercover so would not have got wet but has faded in the sunlight. Is it ok to use still for soaked hay nets? Thanks in advance :-)

It used to be advised to only feed hay that was over 12 months to horses, i.e. last year's hay. Haven't a clue why, but your ponies will soon tell you. :)

I still do feed year old hay; it's because the sugars are lower than in fresh hay, although "they" (the ancient wise ones) didn't know that at the time.
