I am going to collect 20 bales of last summers hay next week to tide me over the summer, (and to save opening any large bale haylage).

I have used up all my pallets for straw - is 'old' hay safe to stack short term on a clean/dry concrete floor barn floor, or do I need to source some new pallets?

I anticipate using it up by Oct.

Thanks

It would probably be alright as it should be dry enough now but if you can't get pallets I'd put down a layer of plastic sheet. Surely Yellow pages will come up with a nearby pallet supplier? I got used pallets for £2 each last year. Your local builders merchants will sell you damp proof membrane (DPM) in a roll. I don't know the price but you get a fair quantity for your money. Or put down a layer of straw? Anything to keep the hay off the concrete would be better than nothing.
