Hi i am new to this but was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to steam hay?

My 13h pony is on full box rest after op and i am trying very hard to keep the weight off him. On vets advice i have changed him from ad lib haylage to rationed hay, the hay is good quality but on the odd occasion a little bit dusty.

Have tried soaking it and letting it drain but he has a haybar and he really doesnt like eating the soggy hay out of it.

My vet suggested steaming but could not sure the best way of doing this.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I fill a trug and just pour a couple of kettles of boiling water over it, cover it with plastic bag or somthing and let it stand for an hour.
Some people use a dustbin and also apparantly you can use a steamer, make hole in bottom of dustbin and insert hose from steamer and switch it on.
Ive not tried that method

I use a plastic bin - put the hay in (in or out of a haynet, but a haynet makes it easier to move), pour on a kettle of boiling water, put lid on.

Could you not feed the soaked hay from a haynet? I personally don't like using them but I am using them at the moment as they serve a purpose in that they slow the horse down - especially if you feed from a small holed one.

I steam hay for my girls just get a plastic bin and a wallpaper stripper put the hose in the bin ( i havnt bothered cutting a hole in the bottom of the bin for the pipe ) put your hay in a net give it a little spray with the hose pipe , put net on top of pipe stick on the lid and leave for about 10 mins works brill.
