hay v haylage

I use to work at a riding school where the school ponies/horses were fed hay in summer and a mix of hay and haylage in winter. I've since just carried on with this with my own pony, don't know why just like habit I suppose. Does anyone else do this? Would I just be better upping the amount of hay as obviously cheaper than haylage????

In winter I buy in big bales of hayledge which works out a lot cheaper than hay. U only buy hay in summer as horse has 24/7 turnout ans never really wants much forage when he comes is so just buy a few bales of hay. (Hayledge just goes off and gets wasted!)

I only use hay in my area no one seems to be able to make good hayledge! and my guys seem to do just as well.

Big chap gets high fibre haylage as he is picky about hay and also we cant soak hay most of the winter due to the ice. As its only him (mine live at home) I use the small baled bagged haylage like horsehage or the one I prefer is Silvermoor. He just about uses it quickly enough in that small package for it not to go off.

Reformed ex fatty coblet has soaked hay in summer and a mix of lo cal chaff and oat straw in the winter for the same reason (ice!). Even high fibre haylage is too much for her, has to be something plainer, also it is cheaper!
