I have just bought some hay straight off the field baled today, can you tell me how long you are supposed to wait before feeding it? and is there anything specific I should do when storing it, obviously it will be stored in a dry clean store but does it need anything else doing with it?

It's normally said that you need to wait about a month to 6 weeks before feeding new hay & even then mix in some old with it initially over a few days so their system gets used to it.

i was told by my hay man, it is fine after a week but introduce it gradually as its like feeding a new feed

Store on pallets, and away from any walls.

I was told never to feed new hay until Oct at the earliest.
The hay lady last year who has 15 horses even called me in Oct and said the hay still isnt ready and to wait until Nov!

if it is cut june time i would not touch it until november but i know people who feed it straight from the feild with no probs!
