Anyone any idea what they expect to pay for round bale hay this year? I know that some farmers have/ haven’t fertilised due to good growth so that should factor in. Thanks Peeps

I haven't bought any of this years hay yet but I bought some last year (2021) round bales for £15 near Carlisle from a local farmer, so I think if farmers are selling last year's hay they must have a good crop or be confident of a good crop this year. I also bought some last year small bales of another farmer for £4each. I like to have some previous year hay to keep feeding until new stuff ready to feed.

Wow!!! That seems incredibly cheap for large bales!!! I paid £50 earlier this year for last year’s - was it decent quality??

I spoke to a farmer only the other day about this - he said the crop's been good this year, so what will push the price up is not a shortage of hay but the cost of haulage.
I guess prices will be geographically variable as well - I think it's always terrifyingly more expensive in the SE than the rest of the UK!

Yes very good quality meadow hay, looks and smells lovely. I buy from the farmer regularly but I just wanted to get a few in so I had a few last year old bales to keep going until autumn. I don't know if he has facilities or wherewithal to ship as he is basically retired farmer who just keeps a few cattle and has small scale operation with smaller older tractor and I'm not sure he would have enough to warrant travel or large scale haulage.
