Is there some sort of magic way of giving hay to a horse whilst they're travelling and it not getting absolutely everywhere?
(Rear facing 3.5t van conversion with an open back/ie, no stallion partition to helpfully keep the hay contained)
Has anyone tried any of the hay bags, do they help?
Sorry, not strictly a c&t post but figured likely to get more people who travel their horses frequently in here.

I use a hay bag. No it doesn't help but it is easier to fill!
.
Shhh, that's not the answer I want :p I want to be told a hay bag is the most wonderful amazing solution and will solve this first world problem perfectly ;)
But no, of course, realistically it's well worth knowing before going and buying one! Thankyou.
Unfortunately I have to soak hay so haynet filling is the norm here, so 1 more doesn't make much difference.

I use hay bags. Le miuex has smaller holes slightly less mess but horse I think was too fristrated with it. Now have the shires version which has bigger holes, slightly more mess, but he does eat. Less mess than a standard Haynet Though

I either let my 2 shetlands into the box to hoover up when I get back, or sweep up and let them have the sweepings. (Little Bl Fuzzy has nearly got stuck in the grooms door to the back! ?)
Def less mess with haylage but I don't buy that often, unless multiple trips coming up in short space of time, like last weekend.

Fat little B fuzzy ? I think companion would love the job of hoovering up the spare bits but he is plenty obese as it is!

The sheet idea is an interesting one, and inexpensive to try. There is a shelf directly in front of the breech bar, which makes little difference to how much hay goes everywhere but might not work with a sheet, I will go and look properly today and see what I could maybe rig up.

Has anyone put soaked hay in a hay bag- does it get slimy or horrible inside? Realising it will also be faffy to soak hay in net then transfer to a bag so suspect I need to give up on that idea. I was so convinced it would help!

I’ve put soaked hay in there but only once it’s been drained a while. Got a big soggy but not bad. I’ve also sprinkled water on it to dampen it down and it was ok. But yeah you couldn’t make it very wet or it will leak! Mine didn’t last as a standard haynet in the stable easier as horse quickly destroyed it but it does work in the lorry.
