Hi all

I'm after some advice regarding my daughter's pony, we have been away from horses from around 15yrs and not been back in long.

He's out at night, fed 1 hard feed and has haylage during the day.

When in the above routine he's got good poos however come winter when he's in and has a few hrs turnout in the school his poo is so runny and I'm gathering it's because he doesn't have a belly full of grass just Haylage.

What can I do to stop him from having the runs, hay makes him cough, I know I can soak it but I'm wondering if there's anything I can give him to help and keep him on Haylage. (YO prefers Haylage)

I was looking at Dengie Meadow Lite with herbs and giving him that alongside Haylage just at a loss on what to do.

He's had Baileys Digest Plus but that doesn't work, apparently pink powder doesn't either (prev owner said)

Any help will be appreciated xx

Alot of horses can't tolerate haylage but the faecal water syndrome is worth looking into its all about the gut being properly balanced, and the hind gut not breaking down the hay or haylage.

Thanks so much I'm going to make a brew and do some reading.

It's just strange though as if he stays in even for 1 night he will have the runs by next morning, however the Haylage amount increases when he does stay in.

Yeah think I'll have to and soak it for a short time as he coughs a little from the dust.

Nothings ever easy 😂
Mine had this , she can’t tolerate haylage at all .. is there any possibility you can switch to hay instead and see if that helps ?

One of my Arab's coughs on dry hay in summer so I put him on science supplement respriaid and it stops him coughing straight away, I do often give the hay a spray though if his coming in to eat.

Not chewing hay properly doesn't break it down so causes issues the other end.

Think I'm just going to give in and feed hay but wet it down for a few mins, tha ks for the info x

you can steam the hay as an alternative to soaking?

one of mine coughs ever so slightly on dry hay, so i pour a boiling kettle over the haynet then empty it in to his hay cube and thats enough to stop it.

easier than soaking :)
