Haylage fed to a good doer- Bad idea?

I thought about this as I remember a horse a few years ago who had lami at the time being fed straw as vet had advised it. Funny thing is that yard was haylage only too so maybe it was her only option. Im not sure if it has to be certain type though cos they dont they do barley straw and oat straw???

can you bulk it out with straw perhaps?

I did think about this, but heard that straw can cause colic and other problems

Would it work

Straw can form a very useful part of the diet - and I fed it as part of a forage ration to my mare with no ill consequences at all.

No haylage for a laminitic, soaked meadow hay only. Get the yard to reduce your rent as you are not using the haylage included in your livery fee and buy in your own hay.

As others have said...be careful...I would get the haylage analysed first to check the sugar levels.
I had my hay off my own field analysed and it came out way too high in sugars for a laminitic (which I have) so I have had to source other hay to use and feed him less of this and 1 slice of Marksway High Fibre haylage twice per day. I have managed to keep his weight stable with this but I do limit his hay to a certain amount, which means he will run out and be without for a time...but this is all on vets instructions and far better than having laminitis again.
It can be done with haylage but you need to be sure on the facts and figures before switching over.
Personally, having been through the hell of laminitis with my lad last year...I would search further afield for hay rather than risking it with haylage...but that might not be possible...there is hay out there but it takes a bit of searching for it.

My horse used to eat his straw bedding last year when the hay the yard gave was rubbish - didnt do him any harm. Cant say I was very pleased with the thought of him eating the whole bed, but I am sure some in a hay net wont do pony any harm.

In fact Baileys used to make golden chaff (or similar) that was mostly molassed straw!
