Hi all:-)
Have just recently got my 15.2 hh tb gelding .he lives out all year round and is a good doer apparently :-) ... Just wondering roughly in kg what amount of hay he should be eating? Im going to measure his weight up this week but i dont want to be under feeding him until then i have a welsh section b pony also , who i obviously have a very different feeding weight for she eats 4/12 kg of hay a day and is an extremely good doer as most welshys are :) hes been out of work all winter so am planning to start of small on that front but i really dont want to make him in any way unfit ! Any rough guidance to amounts until i measure up would be appreciated every feed counts it can do harm or good afterall :-)
Thanks xxx

What's his weight like? What's the grass like? What else are you feeding?

If he's out 24/7 on decent grazing and in good condition he won't need any. If he's poor or there's no grass I'd feed adlib. Grass will be contributing to the weight of forage he's getting so I wouldn't worry about weighing it - I'd look at the horse on front of me and adjust as necessary.

:-) he has the perfect weight and muscle - im getting a once over check just to check his back etc before riding so il know his weight thursday - grass is rich where he is and i had left it too grow out before he came , previous owner said he needs quite alot of hay which to be honest i didnt think he would and also he doesnt seem interested in his hay which is odd my little welshy gobbles it up given the chance lol for the monent iv just been putting hay down as an option but he picks the grass so i guess that has more nutrition for him :) i just worry about the fact he is eating all day but has not yet got his tack (have a saddle fitting coming up) so iv been walking him up the paths i really wouldnt want to spoil his fab muscle tone and condition :) its difficult we dont have a school either thats the only downside
