Whats the diffrence? I bourght a bale of horsehage at the weekend, I was asked if I wanted the Rye grass or the normal stuff. Both are same price and the lady in the shop didnt know the difference. She said she thinks one is better for those prone to lami but she didnt know which one.

Can anyone explain it?

Also, What is the diffrence with Silage?

Sorry if I sound silly but I honestly dont know the answers!

3 different kinds of 'Horsehage'

Green (RYE) has far more sugars etc and far more energy
Blue - is the 'normal' and approved by lami trust
Purple (timothy) is quite similar to blue but fab for horses prone to Azoturia etc.

Horsehage is just a branded form of haylage, sold in small bales. Usually available in Ryegrass, High Fibre and Timothy varieties. The High Fibre and Timothy varieties are marketed as suitable for laminitics as they contain less sugar than the Ryegrass variety. Ryegrass is the highest in calories, so suitable for hard-working horses or those lacking condition.

I have just looked into all this for my new foaly...........
Horsehage is the trade/brand name a company uses for haylage- it is top quality stuff.

Their website is.....
http://www.horsehage.co.uk/

You can contact them for advice - the Ryegrass is high in protein and fibre - better for youngsters etc and the Hi-Fibre & Timothy is lower in protein I believe and better for natives or lamis etc.... but they do have an advisor to help and it does tell you about each on their website.

People keep telling me Horsehage is top quality and very expensive..... but here it is cheaper and you get more (1.5kg more but still more!) than other haylage such as CWG etc!!?

I think Horsehage website also tell you about Silage and how it is very wet and not really suitable to give to horses at all.

I know some people feed silage to there horses

but unless you have a cow I'd stick to hay or haylage

Blue Horsehage is NOT approved by the Laminitis Trust. All the Marksway Horsehage range carry a Hoofkind logo which is very similar to the LT logo but it is not the same thing. This is one of the reasons i do not like Marksway as a company as it is far too easy to confuse the two logos.
