haylage or hay...?

Hay as mine gets fat on thin air let alone haylage. Hay I can soak all the nutrients out of so she can just chomp away all day!
If I had a skinny I'd go with haylage, but I find as long as I can soak hay (which is easy at my yard) that does fine.

haylege, all mine are out and we get a large bale of haylege put in the field for them.
in summer i feed small bale haylege the night before shows as its less dusty in the stable and can be stored outside

ever since someone who knows a lot more than me told me that the acidity of haylage can cause stomach ulcers, i haven't fed it. it was convenient because it didn't need soaking, and could be stored outside, but i don't think it's worth the risk.
big bale hay, if you can cope with it, is much cheaper than small bale.

I'm feeding haylage this year. The dinky ponies are having meadow hay, but the other four are having haylage - no dust, no waste and I have worked it out that it will be the same cost as feeding hay - as last year I wasted so much because it was dusty.

I'm thinking of feeding half and half this winter as I have have to soak hay and have no access to running water except rain water so it's a right pain if it's not been wet for a bit. Think I can put some in a net high enough so the shettie can't reach it, and the other 2 can, and then not so much soaking required.
