Haylage that smells of feet / cheese

Does anyone know why some haylage smells of feet / cheese? The haylage we get at our yard normally smells quite pleasant (it smells like grass). However, the newest batch has a strong smell.

That sounds off to me, or it might be silage if its wetter than your normal stuff, personally if it doesnt smell like id want to eat it myself i wouldnt touch it

Don't feed it. Is it just one bale or the lot?

Should smell nice and rich. As soon as it smells sickly (horrible smell) or catches in your throat I wouldn't feed.

Send it back, anyone reputable will take it back and exchange any off bales.

I lost my horse after feeding haylage id vaguely wondered about but was in a hurry to get to work and it was all i had left (new was being delivered later that day)
He was prone to colic anyway and i might have been nothing to do with the haylage but id never ever risk it again. In fact i wouldnt ever feed haylage at all now!

Thank you for all your replies. I have searched online for an explanation about the cause of the smell but could not find anything. There is a lot of information about haylage smelling of alcohol but nothing about it smelling of Parmesan.

I am so sorry this has happened to you. I am not surprised this has put you off haylage for life.

There is only one reason for baled grass not to smell like baled grass...

It is being digested by something else already... bacteria or fungus!
