I have been very fortunate to have been buying large square bales of haylage all winter for £26, however it has now run out :( My options at the moment are: large bales of haylage for £40 or small bales of hay for £4 - which is the most cost effective and what would you go for?

Thanks :)

Hum, that's quite expensive for haylege and cheap for hay but haylege still cheaper.. A large round will last one of my horses 3weeks adlib. So that's a little less than £2 a day. He'd easily eat 3/4 of a bale of hay a day though.

BUT if you've only got one horse to feed a lot of round bales wouldn't keep a week, depending how wet they are. Also depends how easy it is to store, get delivered and feed as to which is better value. Spring is nearly were so won't be needing to feed for long.

I would go for the haylege if you can. I am luck to be able to buy large square bales at £25 each whenever I need, but I remember when I changed over a few years ago I thought it would be expensive and was dithering but the reduction in hard food and improvement in the horses was well worth it. I have 7 on these large bales so easily go through it in time, but for one horse how about manebale or something similar, a bit more than your hay price but may even out with less hard feed needed?

I have two horses to feed and four cows! Might try to source silage for the cows though!!

I definitely prefer haylage (which is what they are currently on) and don't relish the thought of hay-soaking etc. Just wondered if 10 bales of hay was roughly equivilent to 1 bale of haylage??
