How many kgs does you horse eat in a day (in winter)!

I Have a 16h tb whos in a night and fed hay in the field during the day.

Im just trying to work out if it would be worth switching to hayledge this year. I think the larger bales will be to big and the smaller bales arent very cost affective.

I'd be tempted to go for the round bales of hay instead! At least hay doesn't go off! Haylege will last around 10 days once unwrapped(so i'm told, the smell when it's fresh is bad enough!), and i don't think 1 horse could get through a whole bale on it's own in that space of time! Also Haylege affects some horses differently to others, Some it doesn't bother, but it can send others a little over zealous, shall we say

, IT gives my mare protein lumps

and our youngster has bad guts on it, so we stay away from it! Hope this helps!

Thanks - I have to soak my hay at the moment as my horse gets a mucky nose if i dont, haylage apeals to me coz i wouldnt have to soak it, Hes been on haylage before when it was included in my livery so it doesnt affect him, I suppose the only option would be to group up with other liveries so we get through the bales before it turns bad.

Think it would be worth getting others to come in with you. My 16.2 TB got through c8kgs a night of haylage over winter a night, would have eaten more if i let him. Interestingly at the mo feeding hay as not enough feeding for haylage at the mo and working our far more expensive!!
