Does anyone find haylage rich? started to bring my mare in for the vvinter and it doesn't appear to agree vvith her belly. Does anyone else find this?

yes - our haylage this year is like rocket fuel - I've one horse who can't eat it at all - gives him runny droppings and then colic. He's on hay and NAF pink powder.

They do get used to it though - my old boy started getting the runs when he first came in and now is fine - gave him pink powder for a couple of weeks while he adjusted.

Mine are all fine on it, but like the poster above, ours is a dryish meadow grass mixture. Mind you, I've had ryegrass haylage in the past too, and that has never caused problems either!

Haylage does this to my horse. Sometimes they get used to it, sometimes not. Mine horse didnt. he has high fibre horshage which seems to agree with him more.

Sunny gets the squits on haylage for the first couple of weeks of winter but then evens out a bit. Crappy haylage will still set him off again. Why on earth is bought in large bale haylage of such variable quality, even in the same delivery from the same supplier. Some bales are really good, some crap and bordering on dangerous with loads of soil scraped in it. Horsehage can provide consistent quality - it's more expensive but at least you know it's worth the money.

I'm surprised you say that as I find my haylage incredibly consistent in quality, and they have each batch analysed by D&H so that they have give you a break down when they deliver, and then choice to opt for the same or a different batch if you want something richer or less so with your next order

My old boy gets a bit 'loose' if he's solely on haylage so he's on meadow hay in a net with a little handful of haylage in the middle just so he doesn't feel left out, i do the same with our Highland mare as she gets fat on fresh air and then the others have haylage without any problems, your mare may be better on a lower grade batch which perhaps isn't so rich for her.

Some horses don't agree with it at first, you could try mixing it with hay for a little while and seeing if they adjust or finding haylage drier so it is more like wrapped hay. Some of my friends make haylage like this and it is just great, the horses love it and look really well.
