I've always put a haynet up in the stable before going to fetch my horses in and let them eat as soon as they come in. Is that wrong? Someone I know lets their horses stand for 30mins-1 hour before giving them hay saying hay so soon after grass can cause colic? Is that true?

(When the grass is at it's best I don't bother giving hay unless they're going to be stood in for a couple of hours or I give them a bit as a treat after they've been ridden.)

my horses routine is they come in from the field and go stright to the hosing bay to get there legs and sole hoofs hoses, then they are tied outside there stable and groomed, then stable rugged. Dependant on if they are getting excercised or not. They then go in the stable for there eveing feed, and then are given their haynets. But i have on the odd occassion let them eat right after turnout and they are fine. this is actually a question my fellow livery asked her vet but he said he has never heard of this! Horses are more likely to colic if you dont feed them and then just one day pump bulk food into them.. but no my friends vet said shed never had a colic case based on feeding or hay after immidiate bringing in..

Ours always have hay in their stables. Straight from field to stable. Never had problem.

If they come in with a grass belly then they stand for an hour before exercise. There will be hay in the stable, but they'll ignore it if they're full of grass.
