Hi,

what is your experience with the lifetime of haynet ropes?

We got a large red and black haynet from Shires, about two years old.

When two weeks ago the rope of the haynet was torn, I got the rope from another red and black Shires haynet (the same type) where the mesh had a few wholes and what has been three years old.

So, I replaced the torn rope of the two-years old haynet with the still intact rope of the other three-years old haynet.

And this morning, this haynet rope has been torn again. What is going on there?

Is your horse getting caught on the net in the night? Certain fastners on the front of rugs can catch quite easily.

Maybe try tying it through some bailer twine to give a break point, or try feeding not using a net.

Well, we do DIY livery and our haynet always hangs up nicely, and we never had to soak hay. Also, the horse was without rug for the nights when this happened.

We probably will be getting another rope from a hardware shop and if this rope gets torn, too, then we will try a plastic coated steel wire with eyelets like those that are people using to lock up their bicycles ...

As you say, hardware store type rope, comes in loads of pretty colours. Mine never wore out.

When I was on a livery yard I used to replace all the tie strings with lurid rope before I even used the nets. So much easier to identify a dayglo yellow/orange/green tied net where it shouldn't be then ;):)

I use the blue(flecked red) rope from B&Q & buy it by the metre. About 1.5 to 2 metres for a large haynet. It always last longer than the ones the haynets come with and is easier to tie too.:)
