Hb505 side marker lights

We've just dug the horse box or after it has sat in the yard for a couple of years. As we want to use it a bit more again.

It is a HB505, unfortunately young calves had got round it and damaged a couple of bits.

Mainly the lights that they took a fancy to.

Are the side marker lights compulsory?

One of them is missing the lens cover and the bulb holder inside.

It is a rubbolite thing, I've found some replacement ones but they look a little different (they don't have holes in the rubber to screw it in place like this one) so I don't know if they would be the same size. They also seem expensive for what they are!

Any other options, if they are required?

Thanks when do they become compulsory?

They are definitely lights, the other side lights up. This side has wires going into it but the bulb holder and lens are missing

Look on ebay, you can buy the parts cheaply and fit them yourself its about 30 min work if that, you may be able to upgrade to LED.

I would be replacing them, if they were there originally there was a reason for it, you dont want to be in a position where you have an accident and your insurer weasles out because of the trailer not being up to spec.

I would go into an IW dealer and ask the question or take photos and contact IW direct

I've now managed to find the guidance, it says 6n not including the draw bar is when they need side marker lights. Then they need rear facing red ones and front facing clear ones.

Ours were just clear front facing and obviously not 6m.

I'll leave the one in place for now but I'll keep the other one off. If I can find one that looks the same I'll probably replace it for completeness but I'm not going to worry driving it around.

The ones on eBay all look slightly different, I can get a lens and a bulb holder though and make up a complete light. About £23 for these two parts.

Those side lights are really important if you drive on lanes where space can be tight. Too many numpties flying along and don't register that you have a trailer on. Don't give them an excuse by not replacing! They're also very handy when reversing in the dark. If it's on the left, I'd say less vital for road safety, but on the right I'd want it there.

I wouldn't want to be driving around without side lights (if you are talking about the ones on the wheel arches of the trailer). It is v easy for other traffic to underestimate your width without them. I have a Bateson trailer and when it was last serviced I had my side lights replaced with LEDs, they are excellent, v bright.

Our little sheep trailer originally had side lights on the wheel arches but since the lights now work off a number board they didn't work. OH fitted brackets on each one and we attach cycle lights to that. No idea if we need to but we feel safer with them on.

I would guess the OP is talking about the ones higher up, not on the wheel arch. Mine has them. They're not compulsory but obviously help with visibility.

They are about level with the top of the wheel arches but sit in the channel in front.

I was going to get a new lens and bulb holder but it was about £19 for these two parts.

I ended up buying another complete unit to replace it. £18.71 from a local auto parts store.

So both sides now working perfectly.

Also took some time to sort the rear lights out, I had a couple of lights which didn't work all the time and two of the bulbs blew shortly after using it again.

I ended up taking both light units off, cleaning all the contacts, replacing the bulbs and putting back together. That got all bar two of the lights working. Dismantling the 7 pin plug and cleaning it all out sorted the final two lights.

So all working properly now, just the roof left to seal.
