My horse (TED) is usually a very quiet boy. Easy to handle and ride. I would trust him with anyone. BUT the last couple of months his behavior has changed. He has turned very spooky whilst being ridden. He's started to drag people around while being lead. He will mow me down when i go into his stable. About a month ago i was asked to get to the yard as he had gone mental in his box. He was dripping in sweat, rearing over the door, snorting and very upset. I had to turn him out for the night for his own saftey. Yesterday he was fine when i turned him out (with his usual pals) Had another call to say he out. A lady on the yard caught him. When i arrived he was like a bomb waiting to explode. It turned out that he had gone through the 5ft electric fence which was on then totally smashed the main field gate. He shot out of the drive tangled up with wire and stakes into the path of a car. witness not 100% sure if the car hit him or he just lost his balance but he fell over a hedge into a garden (ploughing the garden up) then jumped the hedge back out and ended up in the yard down the road from us. The driver didn't stop and the man whoes garden he poughed was very nice and more worried about Ted. Luckily he doesn't have a mark on him but got vet coming to check him over. So why the change in his behavior. He has had no changes in his routine or feed.
sorry its a bit of a ramble
thanks for reading

Have you had his eyesight checked? Thats something i would think about as it does sound like hes changed rapidly.

How scarey...I feel for you.
Has he had any changes to his field mates or things which dont seem very obvious to us but may be a big deal to him.Ie, routine etc.
Have a good chat with the vet while he is there.
Maybe he prefers to be out???

that's terrifying! what does the vet think about the change in his behaviour? could anything have happened to him that you don't know about? kids throwing stones perhaps? but that wouldn't explain why he was upset in his stable! I hope it all works out for you soon

It might be worth giving him a blood test...is there any chance someone could be feeding him something dodgy? And yes, eyesight might be a good one too. Hope everything works out for you...fingers crossed.

Poor you! Must be scary.
Have his ears checked too, he may have mites that are driving him nuts?

Good luck

How awful, def get the vet to check everything possible, the only horse i knew who changed to such an extreme for no reason had a brain tumour unfortunately.

Hopefuly your boy has just had a change in routine or like someone said could someone have bene harassing him or giving him food he shouldnt be getting?

I would def check eyesight sounds a bit strange to do that all of a sudden! Have bloods checked to also i know it may not have anything to do with it but have you upped his feed or changed it?? My friends horse went mental after having his feed changed once!

Goodness me how scary for you and your poor horse. Horses rarely have such dramatic changes in behaviour for no reason. Echo the other replies really - bloods, eyesight and I would consider neurological tests if nothing conclusive comes back.
Good luck and keep us updated.

Charley that sounds awful, hopefully the vet can find out what is wrong, it is strange that it happened so suddenly. keep us posted please, I hope things are okay.

scary - fingers xed for something simple but I also only know of one other case and that was epilipsy which then became a brain tumour.

hopefully it's something like ear mites

only other thing - has there been a change of the person looking after him ? could the staff be being harsh with him ? does happen 'cos he sounds scared to me

I was going to say eyesight - quite common for them to have a nasty knock and just loose their sight in one eye - and also very very scarey.

I know it's basic, but try waving your hands in front of each eye for a reaction. Also blindfolding each eye in turn and leading him around a few cones in the school.

Hope he's ok xx

That sounds very frightening. I had a similar problem with one of my horses (though nowhere near as extreme) a couple of months ago which started just after those terribly high winds we had. It turns out the wind had slightly lowered the power supply lines in a woody area next to his field and every time a twig or branch or bird landed on them they started fizzing and cracking which sent him absolutely demented. He was spooky and worried and out of sorts for weeks. My other horse (who shares the same field) wasn't affected at all. I have since read that electricity can have strange effects on people and animals.

Good luck with getting to the bottom of it.

Another reason why it could be eyesight - my boy hates strong winds as he obviously conpensates his blindness with better hearing....
