Most will not remember, but coblet used to be a horror at hacking out. Even in company, being led, whatever, he would NOT leave the paddock. He would rear up, spin and gallop back, and nothing would stop him. Roll on 1 year of battleing with him, we finally said enough and sent him to bootcamp for 2 weeks, he had a paddy with the lady and tried to jump a 5 bar gate with her and reared so high he almost went over. 2 weeks later, somehow he was a new horse, and with another year at home he was hacking out well in company and towards the middle of last year we were able to try new routes without him napping or worrying. He is now a star to hack out in company, I really trust him now :)

Hacking alone is a whole different game, he only goes out if someone is leading him, at the most, leading him half way round then we have to really push on and keep him forward when he knows he is heading home he is fine. Now, we have the 'back lane/railway line' route, about 15 minutes 'round the block' ride. This is coblets favourite hack, mum will usually lead us as far as the lane, then she let's us go and he's fine. This lane is on a road where there is more hacking straight on, so always have trouble him napping down there if we want to go straight.

So today, I borrowed someones waterford Dutch gag to try, and thought it was fab, had great breaks in the field so thought it would be a great time to get him out the paddock and go on our railway line route...all on our own!!

He. Was. Fantastic!!!
Walked away from mum and the paddock very nicely, past another yard (another napping point) well and we trotted around the lanes with pheasants jumping out of all directions  had a little spook and went on well :)
We went PAST back lane, which he was a bit sticky on, but lots of pony club kicks and praise he went past without a glitch, so we turned around and went down the lane :D we went through the park with kids running around shouting 'shire horsey! Shire horsey!' he is NOT a shire :p he loved the attention though and stood like an angel letting the wee tots stroke him :)

Got home nice and safe and too him in the paddock to test our new breaks with jumping for a bit :)

Sorry for such a long post, I suppose I could have just put "coblet hacked out on his own for the first time ever" but that would be boring :p

Cheese and biscuits for all :D

Thank you all very much, we met the owners of our old liverey (before we bought our own place) and they didn't even recognise him  he's a changed pony who was sadly abused in the past, we couldn't even go near him when we first got him, he was a nutcase.
This year had been fantastic, he's getting placed in pretty much everything we do, and were now in the highest class for show jumping! He us a really changed boy, who, for once in his life, is enjoying himself an life all together :)

Aww, congrats to you and coblet! :)

I'm actually really happy to have stumbled across this! I have a similar issue to yours - my new cob turns into a batty, spooky, bolty little thing if asked to hack alone! He's not been here long so I'll persist with battling on solo with him, but you have no idea how much of a relief it is to hear of somebody sending their horse somewhere like that and coming back with a story of success. Will definitely look into it. Looks like the only way is up with you two, good luck!

Mazz- where are you? This woman is a god send. She must have superglue jodhpurs as she stays, and sorts out ANYTHING. and if she can't, no one can! Truly amazing woman, always see her out and about bouncing around on some sort of rodeo horse! :p

There's always hope, I have waited 3 years for this day, and at the time I really felt like giving up, but we saw the potential the little pony had and kept at it! Patience and persistence is the key :)

Really well done, so pleased for you :D And well done to Coblet!

What's the name of the woman you sent him to? :)

I'm down in Devon - have looked around for people of the sort but with no luck... :(

Ahh he's a lovely lad, just a big scaredy who is a complete hell to deal with when it all gets to his head! Well after people going on and on that I should sell on and give up I'm determined to be as frustratingly stubborn as possible, broken bones and bruises... been there, done that, bring it on. I've got a lovely gap year coming up so was planning to have a real crack at breaking his bad habits but would much rather spend the time enjoying him! Once they've got a place in your heart, it's hard to turn away, eh?

Welldone! Bet you're buzzing, can't wait until I have done the same with my girl- the problem is me not her though :-s

Aah you're a bit far from Shropshire then?
Good luck with him, he will come right eventually :)

Er... Just a wee bit?? Out of curiosity, does she have a website or job title of the sort? Only asking because it's a bit hard to work out what I'm looking for when you've got all these horsey people out there claiming to work wonders... I've got no idea!

Hoping it won't come down to sending him to anybody, but nice to have a back-up plan. Thanks, and to you!
