I posted yesterday about being worried about xrays for possible Navicular...

Well yes he does have it, along with predicated severe soft tissue and ligament damage within the hooves. So this along with his spavin and arthiritus its not looking good for my poor boy.

He had new shoes yesterday with special gel pads, he is crippled this morning but to be expected as he always is with new shoes - he is on bute so should help a bit.

They want him to have tildren which apparently starts at £500, am waiting for the first insurance claim to be pushed through to make sure they will pay for this as I will struggle to afford it otherwise.

I have been told shoeing is the best option and to give it a few tries before giving up hope, if the shoeing and tildrin works he could have another couple of years if it doesnt work I may have to make a decision sooner.

Have been told to keep hacking him as it will be worse if I dont.

Poor lad is only 15!!

Oh dear im sorry to hear this, i read your post the otherday and did hope for you!!
Dont worry though I had a chap who had navicular, he still led an very active life, i just accepted somedays when i hopped on he was not completely sound so just turned him back out, most days however he was 100% We continued to hack, show, jump and xc.
He just had special wedge shoes and needed no other meds etc.
I hope that give you a little hope, just give him time to get used to his shoes etc.
Best wishes xx

<<<<<<<<hugs for you both>>>>>>>>>>

You might want to post in veterinary as there are many posters on there that have experience with this. Good luck with your boy and I hope everything works out well x

My old girl had navicular at 16.... she had 2 holes in her Nav bone.
shoeing helped her keep going for just over a year although at a lower level of work.
a friend of mine had an eventer with Nav, with shoeing and tildren he competed lightly on the right ground for 2 years until he was finally retired.
it just depends on the horse. chin up..!! xxx

my horse was diagnosed with navicular a few months ago, it had also caused suspensory ligament damage. he is now retiered in the field cause the vet didnt think the treatment would help much with both problems. he is only 7.
he is field sound and is happy with no shoes on.

Hija - like i posted to you yesterday - my boy has the same combination of problems. He has had tildren for the spavin and it does do what it says on the tin - the spavin is fusing quite quckly. If it helps my insurance company were find with paying out for it too.

We tried shoeing but that didn't help him (and the shoes were £150 oer set) so he is now resting in the field for the winter (but he does have other problems COPD and an Ulcer).

My vet did say that he 'might' return to low level work but it really depends on the horse and how they respond.

Huge amounts of sympathy and hugs - unfortuantly mine is too lame to be gently hacked out - he rears in protest of the pain....

If there is anything I can do to help please let me know...

(((hugs)))

My friends horse has been dealing with navicular for roughly 7 years now... She just says that when he has a bad day, she turns him back out without riding, but in the main he copes very well with hacking and is better when he's getting regular exercise. He was 12 when he was diagnosed and is now a fit and happy 19 year old, so there is hope!

Fingers crossed your horse responds well to the treatment...

My horse had everything on your list except the spavin. To cut a long story short, I took a chance (and it was her last chance) and she went barefoot, trimmed by a DAEP using the KC LaPierre method. To cut another long story short, she came sound in a short space of time and went from strength to strength, and back to pretty much full work.

Two things to consider, barefoot podiatry (though you need to check out the credentials) and a joint supplement - I expect you are already using one. Don't give up hope. PM me if you want to know any more.
