He doesn't like the food bowl

So, the puppy has been in foster care and I dont know what kind of bowl he's been eating from. But, he's very wary of the bowl I got for him. Will only eat a minimum amount but will eat the whole lot off a mat on the floor. He'll drink his water ok from the same type of bowl. I can only think that the sound of the dry food moving around against the metal freaks him out a bit. Any ideas/suggestions?

Use a ceramic or plastic bowl (remove plastic bowl as soon as finished as they're chewable), feed from hand, Kong or other feeding toy, scatter on floor. My puppy has four meals a day and only gets one or two from a bowl, the others are from a Kong or from my hand in short training sessions. Scattering on floor will also slow them down and make them use their nose if you are interested in doing scent work later.

I did give him a few feeds in my hand and he gobbled it all. I was just concerned that I'd have difficulty getting him to eat from a bowl at all if I kept doing that?
 
My pup is the same about his metal bowl, I have to put it on a mat to stop it slipping around so he will eat from it. He used to grab a mouthful of food from the bowl then run away with it!
 
Another thought..do you soak your kibble? We scald out kibble before giving it,just for a minute...this is mainly because I’ve always had a deep chested breed and it’s recommended to avoid bloating..in your dogs case ,the kibble would not” rattle“ against the metal sides..worth a try?
id be trying to see whatever works re the metal bowls,as,in the long term they are so easy for you to clean,D.washer proof and much better than plastic.

also what size / breed is the pup? For a large breed I’d get a wider bowl..

Not in my own experience, when my dogs are working/in training they get all their food on tracks, from my pockets, in pots etc etc, yet they still inhale it from a bowl.

Thanks, that sounds like it's worth trying. He's only 10wks so still small...Lurcher/JRT cross...we think!
