my horse doesnt seem to like his mullen mouth pelham, problem is he grabs the bit & buggers off with you in other bits

he schools really well in his french link but anything more than trot out hacking & i can not stop at all.

any suggestions? don't want to try a pelham with a different mouth as i would like to get away from the 2 reins if possible.

my mare was exactly the same...out hacking whenever she launched into extended trot i was a gonner!
She is also in a french link snaffle to school. I did try french link pelham, but still no brakes.
She went well in the french link 3 ring gag for a while but started to throw her head up as the action of it doesn't suit her.
Someone recommended a waterford snaffle, and touch wood, she's been brilliant in it so far. It's reasonable mild but she can't grab it and bugger off!!

now i was looking at waterfords but wasnt sure if the snaffle would be enough for him?

MD's cob had a hanging-cheek waterford & went very well in it! Quite a severe bit but he was a quite a severe cob! lol
He hacked out in it, went to shows in it, everything & it was very effective!

He had a habit of leaning heavily and/or grabbing the bit, setting his neck & just going faster & faster (at any pace!) until all control was gone!
The waterford prevented him doing this & as he had nothing to argue with, he simply gave up & behaved , so a lot of the effect was psychological I think!

He objected strongly to a Dutch gag for some reason & hated anything pelham like but accepted the waterford quite happily!

sounds like my chap, he sets his neck, goes long & low & its "see you later,i'm off!!!"

liking the sound of the waterford lol

Yeah, I thought the same. My mare had been jumped in really severe bits all her life when I got her, so an ordinary snaffle was never going to stop her!
With the waterford there is nothing for her to fight against and she has become much more settled and easier to hold as a result.

If you don't have any joy with a waterford, try a copper roller or a cherry roller. I found a copper roller to be quite effective for schooling my mare as she likes to bugger off in our downwards transitions in a huge 'look at my medium trot mummy' style, with me bouncing around like a cretin..

I also reccommend a waterford, I use both a loose ring, and a 3 ring dutch gag waterford on my boy (allthough If i had the money would have preferred the Neue Schule Waterford Universal)

I use the stronger bit out hacking as I have the same problem as you without it, particualry harder as I am 5ft 7 and pickle is 17,1hh!

Why not go on www.shop4bits.com and trial a few different bits then see what you like and send back the others!

thannks everyone

have got a hanging mouth & a gag in waterford coming from there to try
