My 15.3hh gelding loves to bite things!

He loves biting brushes. If I stand him to chat to someone after exercise he leans down and bites jump wings, and the trees in his field are all chewed to death!

However, I dont think it is crib biting, because when he is stabled he never ever bites the door/ walls anything. He doesnt bite the fences in the field either... it seems odd. He is completely settled in the stable and very chilled so it doesnt strike me as a vice

Anybody got any ideas as to why he does this, or is it just a quirk?

(dentist sees him regularly, and no problems!)

My boy does it, today I mucked out with him in the stable and he bit the wheel of the wheelbarrow. The look of disgust on his face was hilarious!

I think in his case he is exploring things with his mouth.

I suppose its their only way of physically exploring things..
I'd love someone to explain to me our friends' mare's behaviour....she bites every time she's had a treat...in her stable, its the door, in the field, its the gate! Dentist has checked her teeth, everything fine.
Very odd creatures!

I think sometimes its a baby thing some horses don't grow out off, my horse takes the schooling whip off me, loves chewing on leadropes but only when you've got it in your hand when catching him for example, he's even latched on to the door frame above his head!...that was very strange but that was just out of frustration, its just the way he is, very playful and inquisitive.

My mare does this - brushes, plastic water carriers, the metal gate - I bought her a jolly ball for her to grab and play with. It sits dejected in the field having not been touched at all! Typical.

my boy does exactly the same. chews everything, and i mean everything inc other horses faces/rugs. however, never seems to crib bite. just baby chew!!
